8/29/08 Not Everyone is Buying the "Remote Access" Ploy |
|
Within the last week, we've gained two new small business clients who came to us citing discontent with "remote access services" being pushed on them by their previous IT support company. We're witnessing a growing trend amongst IT companies that we feel compelled to expose. This is what happens when service companies are unable to stand on merit and capabilities. They begin selling unnecessary a la cart items to pump up sagging revenues. We use remote access frequently, but rarely do we charge for it. As someone once said "Here's The Thing": http://onyxconsulting.com/blogjk/?p=16 |

8/10/08 Hackers Taking Aim At Apple Market |

Security specialists said Saturday that hackers are taking increasing aim at iPhones and Macintosh computers as the hot-selling Apple devices gain popularity worldwide.......more |

7/28/08 Apple Grants Authorization to Onyx/Decatur! |
As of Friday, Apple has recognized our second location in Decatur as an "Apple Authorized Service Center Plus" as well as "Apple Authorized Reseller" (dealer). This has been in the works for some time now and gives us much cause for celebration. In light of the Apple Store's prominence throughout Atlanta's various malls/neighborhoods, authorizations aren't easy to come by. We must be doing something right. Perhaps it's our 150% repair accuracy as compared to the national average of ASP's ? Many of our existing customers who live in (and around) Decatur no longer have to journey up I-85 to Northcrest. We're also meeting a multitude of new customers every week who opted not to make the trip before we opened Decatur. The only other local option was the chain store in Edgewood Plaza. Now Mac & PC users alike have a fantastic new option. We're ready Decatur....Bring it! |
Onyx repairs buckets of iPods every week. Battery changes and most repairs are done while you wait. We keep a current stock of new iPods and can also assist with data recovery if needed. Come to Decatur or the Northeast Atlanta location to have one of our Mac gurus take a look at your iPod. |

We need two more shop technicians. See Craigslist or our Jobs page for the description. No phone calls. No "drop-ins". Email resume only. Who's got the stuff?! This ain't kindergarten. Last guy lasted 5.5 weeks. Guy before him lasted 2! We're looking for a few good men....(or women). Come on people. We know there're more champs out there. |

6/20/08 Onyx Bids A Sad Farewell To KLIM |
Friday brought an end to well over three memorable years working with Kevin Lim. We took him out for steaks, beers and Whirlyball a week before (see gallery pics), Justin's daughter Delia baked him a red velvet cake for Dim Sum, the guys had a cake for him on Friday....we all tried to convey how much we're going to miss having him around. It still hasn't really sunk in yet that he's off to Florida. Patient, kind and solid as can be, Kevin was revered by our clientele and staff alike. He was a great asset to us all on a personal and professional level. He will be sorely missed, but we all hope to stay in touch as time marches on. |

Onyx/Decatur IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS!! |
|
It's been just short of seven months since the building was purchased in late November and we're finally ready to open for business. Although we're still wiring and moving stuff in, we have service capability and can accept customer repairs with no problem. The Decatur store is located in downtown Decatur behind the McDonalds at 122 Williams St. 30030 404-924-8630. See you there! |

6/12/08 Onyx II Passes Final Building Inspection |
|
In the beginning.....there was nothing........and City of Decatur said "Let there be Onyx!".......and there was Onyx......and City of Decatur said "It is good." The fine people at City of Decatur Development gave our building the seal of approval and brought an end to our circus of work crews, inspections, and a whole lot of headaches. Now we have to set up the infrastructure......servers, work-stations, backups, firewalls.....anyone know a company who does that kind of thing?

6/11/08 Raising The Flag! |
With the help of a very affordable and most excellent Mitsubishi projector, we've made certain we won't be missed. Tracing the image with magic marker was a snap. Painting clean edges on a brushed brick surface was a little more challenging. So - now that we finally found a good excuse to buy a decent projector - if you're driving through Decatur on a Friday night, you might see a bunch of IT consultants decompressing at the make-shift Onyx drive-in theater. Feel free to join us, but if you use your cell phone during the movie - we'll have to test it's impact resistance between concrete and an Estwing drilling hammer. Fair warning. |

5/31/08 Benefits! We got 'em. |
Do the benefits of working at Onyx ever end? Health & dental care, 401k matching, profit sharing, paid vacation, bonuses, company dinners, recreational outings and NOW...YMCA memberships for employees with over 6 months time. Just another way for us to challenge the stereotypes. Geeks? Nerds? Wimps? Not in our company! No sir! Well......maybe some nerdyness here and there......we'll call it "nerd chic". Anyway - some nerds are gettin' healthy 'round here! |
Note to self: Apply a test area before painting entire building. Last weekend, Andrew and I (Justin) busted ass to paint the whole building only to realize the green that looks good in my bathroom looks like HELL on the building! Color temperature? Light quality? Duh?! Well, after many attempts to convince myself (and others) "it's OK...it'll work..." I returned at 3:30 today, snapped a shot, fired up the sprayer and - voila! Four hours later we have a color that won't unleash the City of Decatur's scorn upon us. Thanks to Seth, Frank and Andrew for re-masking everything last night. |

5/16/08 Onyx II Opening In 3-4 Weeks! |
Here's a "before and after" of the front right corner view of the new shop. Multiple rooms were ripped out and you can see the rubble from the chimney that stood in the center. Laminate beams had to be installed to span the ceilings and provide support for the load bearing walls we removed. Today the floors were installed, communications were tested and the security system was planned. By middle of next week the granite counter tops, electrical work, lighting and HVAC should be completed. Final inspection by City of Decatur should happen by end of the week and then we begin building out the lab. More pictures available in the gallery link above. Decatur - here we come. |

5/9/08 Onyx Texas Hold 'em Annual |
The game went from 7:00 to 11:30. Drew and Seth robbed Justin & Bernadette in their own home and took everyone else's money too. This disgrace can't go unanswered. Perhaps monthly tournaments are in order. |

4/16/08 Britt Thompson Receives Promotion |
It was four and a half years ago when Britt found his way to our doorstep. He's been kicking ass and taking names ever since. As of this day, Britt holds the titles of Senior Technician and Personnel Manager at Onyx Consulting. It's a damn good thing too. This Saturday he gets hitched to the lovely Ms. Helen Beattie and that monster-rock on her hand ain't cubic zirconium! Congratulations Britt. We salute you! |
